Bethany Beach Delaware Wedding of Jackie & Bryan|The Addy Sea

Any wedding where I can wear flip flops – or better yet go barefoot – is always awesome! Bryan’s only request was that he and Jackie get married somewhere by the water – any body of water. They both love the beach, and when they visited the Addy Sea in Bethany Beach, Delaware they both felt it would be perfect for the intimate, beachfront wedding they pictured for themselves.  Today we have a few portraits and photos from the wedding preparations – ceremony and reception photos coming soon. Enjoy!

From the couple…
One of the things we’ve asked ourselves over the past 5+ years is how Bryan ended up at country line dancing night, where we met. The answer we keep coming back to is fate. Every decision he made that afternoon – from agreeing to go out on a weeknight, to staying once he found out it was line dancing night, to sending drinks over to my friend Amie and me – was out of character for him. Fortunately he did all of those things, and once he introduced himself we spent the rest of the night talking and laughing, telling embarrassing stories about ourselves.

Five years, a new house, one dog, and many more embarrassing stories later we are excited to become the Minkas.

We got engaged on the beach in the Dominican Republic, and set out to plan a wedding that matched our personalities. A month later, we stood in The Addy Sea, staring out at the beach and ocean just yards away. At that moment Bryan looked at me and said exactly what I was thinking: “this is the place.”

What made you choose The Addy Sea for your wedding?
We  knew we didn’t want to spend the reception inside of a ballroom – that wouldn’t have felt like ‘us’. I found the Addy Sea through some internet searching, and it was the first place we went to visit. As we stood on the top floor, looking out at the ocean, Bryan turned to me and said “this is it,” and I agreed. Having our wedding there meant having the whole B&B to ourselves, with rooms that our family and friends could stay in. We were so happy to have our closest loved ones spend the weekend together in one house.

Tell us about your wedding dress…
Jackie: The dress is a lace Mori Lee dress. Instead of going traditional white/ivory, the underlay of the dress is a champagne color. To me, it feels like the dress and the Addy Sea, which was built in 1902 and still has its antique, old world charm, go together.

What was the most challenging part of planning your wedding and why?
Trying to figure out what needs to get done and when

Do you have any advice for other couples who are planning their weddings?
It’s easy to get caught up in tiny details, and things like Pinterest or wedding Q&A boards can make things feel overwhelming. At some point you have to step back and say – here is what we want, and it doesn’t matter if other people have done it this way before.

What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?
We’re having a small wedding so that we can actually spend time with each other and with our friends and family. We just want to have a great time!

Now that you’re married, and you’ve been through planning a wedding together, what advice would you give to other couples who are just starting the process?
I would tell other couples to consider getting a wedding planner, even if it’s just a day of coordinator.. It wasn’t until March that I desperately wished I had gotten one. When my Pop Pop became very sick and started to decline quickly, the last thing I wanted to do was plan the wedding. Having someone to take all of the workload off of me would’ve been amazing. Any bride also needs to remember to EAT. I barely ate after the ceremony and I had so many people coming up to me at the cocktail hour and the dinner, that I had very few bites of food and all of the wine went straight to my head.

What were you most stressed about and how did it turn out?
I was most stressed about everything just coming together. Everything turned out fine, I left a few little things at home that I had wanted for the day, but honestly it didn’t matter in the long run.

Tell us about your decor & details.
I absolutely loved my invitations, table numbers and place cards. ZZ House is actually my aunt and uncle’s company, and I knew they did a lot of work for different local business in the Delaware community. But until recently I didn’t know they did wedding invitations. I couldn’t be happier with how they came out, and I’m not just saying that because I’m biased:)I also really loved the flowers. I never realized until I started wedding planning that you kind of blindly order the flowers without knowing exactly what the end result will be. I couldn’t believe how perfect and beautiful they were. All of the employees at Belak’s were amazing and I will definitely be a returning customer. Dottie, the coordinator at the Mendenhall, was also very easy to work with and so nice. She made the process of planning the reception easy.

What was the most challenging part of planning your wedding and why?
My grandfather who I was very close to, passed away rather unexpectedly at the end of March. I have been absolutely devastated, especially since I had always pictured him there at my wedding. When this happened, I took almost a month off from wedding planning, and it was difficult to get started again.

Do you have any advice for other couples who are planning their weddings?
Consider hiring a wedding planner, or at least a day of coordinator. When my grandfather passed away, I wished I had hired one who could have picked up some of the work for me.

Why did you choose Leslie as your photographer?
I looked through all of the pictures online and in her blog and fell in love. After getting to know her, I knew she was the perfect fit for Ryan and I. Her pictures are beautiful and she is so easy to get along with.

How did you choose your venue?
Gina: My cousin had gotten married at the Mendenhall Inn in 2009. It was a beautiful reception and we all had so much fun. When it was time for us to start looking at reception venues, I knew I wanted to at least look at the Mendenhall. When we walked into the grand ballroom, we both knew that this would be the place we would have our reception.mendenhall inn wedding reception

What’s next for the two of you?
We’re planning on buying my Pop Pop’s house, which is something that I am becoming very excited about. I would give anything to have him still here, but since that’s something I can’t change, I feel honored to be able to buy his home. I lived there for three months as a child and spent so many weekends and holidays there, that it’s always been my second home. Other than that, we plan on relaxing and enjoying being newlyweds.
